Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - After a 10-day layoff, the Holy Cross baseball team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 7-4 in a non-conference game at Earl Lorden Field Tuesday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 5-9 overall while the Minutemen drop to 3-14. Juniors Tucker Frawley and Tom Potvin accounted for three HC runs, while senior Mike Marron and sophomore Andrew Tenaglia combined for 17 putouts defensively, helping sophomore pitcher Matt Blake get his second win of the season.

The Crusaders got on the board first when Erik Kistler came up with an RBI single, plating senior Steve Buckley, who had reached base on an error by UMass catcher Bryan Garrity. Potvin then scored on a fielder's choice, giving Holy Cross a two-hit, two-run fifth. The Minutemen came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a three-run shot by Anthony Santos, until the Crusaders put up two more runs in the top of the sixth. Senior third baseman Mike Schell started things off with a double to left center, and later advanced to third on a Buckley single up the middle. Potvin then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Schell. The Crusaders scored Tenaglia on a double steal, giving HC a 4-3 lead.

The Minutemen tied the score again in the bottom of the seventh when Jason Twomley homered to right, but Holy Cross responed in the eighth, as Frawley drove in two runs to give the Crusaders the lead for good. Jamie Aldrich scored an insurance run for Holy Cross in the ninth.

HC starter Mike Miller went three innings without giving up a run. He faced 11 batters and allowed just one hit, while striking out three. Blake pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits. Sophomore Scott Hampe earned his third save of the year after going two scoreless innings and striking out two UMass batters.

Holy Cross will travel to Harvard tomorrow to face the Crimson in a non-conference match-up at 3:00 p.m.
