Holy Cross Falls To Canisius, 4-2

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Dale Reinhardt (Livingston, N.J.) recorded two assists giving him 101 career points (41 goals & 60 assists) and freshman J.P. Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) scored his first two collegiate goals, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Canisius, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 4-3-1 overall (3-2-1 AHA), while the Golden Griffins improve to 2-5-2 (2-3-1 AHA). The Crusaders split the two-game weekend series with Canisius. Reinhardt is now the 38th Crusader to reach the 100 career point mark. He is currently ranked eighth on the all-time Holy Cross Division I points and goals list, while he is 10th in assists.

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 9:23 into the first period when Martignetti scored his first collegiate goal. Freshman Joe Brock (Cumming, Ga.) and Reinhardt recorded assists. At the 12:25 mark, the Golden Griffins tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by Jason Weeks. For the period, Holy Cross outshot Canisius by an 8-7 margin, while there were no penalties in the period.

At 5:03 into the second period, Alec Wright fired in a rebound off a shot by Scott Jenks to give Canisius a 2-1 lead. The Golden Griffins increased their lead to 3-1 with a goal by Kyle Bushee. Each team had 10 shots in the period, while Holy Cross went 0-2 on the man-advantage.

Martignetti made it a 3-2 game at the 13:59 mark of the third period when he knocked in a rebound off a shot by Brock for his second goal of the game. Reinhardt earned his second assist of the game on the goal. The Crusaders went with an empty-net with 50 seconds left in the period, but Josh Heidinger was able to score an empty-net goal with 10 seconds remaining for the 4-2 final score.

Holy Cross sophomore goalie Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) made 18 saves and is now 2-1-1 on the season, while Andrew Loewen stopped 28 shots for Canisius to improve to 1-2-1. Holy Cross outshot Canisius, 30-22, while the Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play and the Golden Griffins went 0-2.

The Crusaders return to action on November 23-24, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to take on Atlantic Hockey opponent Air Force. Both games are set to start at 9:05 p.m.
