Holy Cross Men's Ice Hockey Ties Mercyhurst 3-3

ERIE, Pa. - The Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Mercyhurst, 3-3, in Atlantic Hockey action this evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 7-6-1 overall (6-4-1 AHA), while the Lakers are 3-7-3 overall (3-5-2 AHA).

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead at 8:42 into the opening period when Ryan Toomey netted a goal. Mercyhurst then increased its lead to 2-0 just 1:25 later with a power play goal by Scott Champagne. With 1:16 remaining in the period, Holy Cross cut the deficit in half when sophomore Marty Dams (Manotick, Ontario) scored on a slap shot while on the power play for his first goal of the season. Senior Rob Godfrey (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and freshman Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) were credited with assists. For the period, the Crusaders outshot the Lakers by an 18-6 margin.

The Crusaders tied the game at 2-2 at the 11:31 mark of the second period when senior Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.) scored his first goal of the season. Fogarty stole the puck in Holy Cross' zone and skated down the ice beating the Mercyhurst defense before firing the puck into the net. Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst, 13-4 in the period.

Holy Cross took a 3-2 lead at 2:12 into the third period when freshman Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) tipped in a shot by Godfrey on the power play. Senior Jon Landry (Lexington, Mass.) also earned an assist. The goal is Driscoll's fifth of the season. Four minutes later, Mercyhurst's Jamie Coghlan tied the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied through the third period and overtime for the 3-3 final score. Holy Cross freshman goaltender Tyler Chestnut (Faribault, Minn.) made 19 saves is now 2-2-1 on the season, while Tyler Small stopped 43 shots and is 3-6-3. The Crusaders outshot the Lakers by a 46-22 margin. Holy Cross went 2-6 on the power play and Mercyhurst went 1-5.

The Crusaders will return to action on Friday and Saturday, December 1-2, when they travel to Rochester, N.Y., to face Atlantic Hockey opponent RIT.
