Men's Hockey Ties Vermont, 1-1

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Freshman Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) scored a goal and freshman Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) was outstanding in net as he made 36 saves as the Holy Cross men's hockey team tied Vermont, 1-1, on Saturday night in the first day of the Sheraton/TD Banknorth Catamount Cup at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Vermont defeated Holy Cross in a shootout, 4-3, to advance to the finals against Quinnipiac. Holy Cross will face Western Michigan on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the third-place game. With the tie, the Crusaders are now 5-4-5 overall and extend its unbeaten streak to five games (1-0-4), while the Catamounts are now 4-6-4 overall. The Crusaders are 3-1-2 in their last six games against teams from Hockey East, including a 1-0-2 mark this season. Previously this season, Holy Cross earned a 6-4 victory at Providence on October 20 and tied Merrimack, 2-2, on December 4.

The first period went scoreless as Roy made 15 saves, while Joe Fallon stopped five shots for Vermont. Each team went 0-2 on the power play.

The second period also went scoreless as the Catamounts outshot the Crusaders by a 10-5 margin, while each team went 0-3 on the man-advantage.

With a power play just concluded, Sheen fired a shot into the left side of the net off a pass from sophomore forward Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) at the 5:45 mark of the third period. The goal was Sheen's eighth in the last five games as he leads the team in goals with nine. Vermont tied the game with 32 seconds left in the period when Peter Lenes scored his fifth goal of the season.

Fallon stopped 18 shots for the Catamounts. Vermont outshot Holy Cross by a 37-19 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-5 on the power play and Vermont went 1-5.
