Jerry Dickinson scores his second goal of the season

Providence Edges Holy Cross, 3-2

Sept. 26, 2006

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Josh Trott (Glen Cove, N.Y.) scored his ninth goal of the season and Jerry Dickinson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) his second, but it wasn't enough as Providence edged Holy Cross, 3-2 in men's soccer non-conference action Tuesday night at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.

The night started slow with only three shots in the first twenty minutes of play from both teams. Then at 20:35 seconds later Timothy Ritter (Weston Mass.) scored off a cross from Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to put the Friars on the board.

Providence had the 1-0 lead going into the second half, but Holy Cross came out strong as Trott knotted the game less than two minutes into the second off an assist from Marsalis Beckford (Brantford, Ontario).

The Friars scored the go-ahead goal off a corner kick at 53:52. Almost 30 minutes later the Crusaders came back again to tie it up at two when Dickinson scored off a solid shot right outside the box from a Joseph Cherackel (Storrs, Conn.) assist.

As the clock wound down overtime was looking like an option, however Providence did not allow it as Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left.

With the loss Holy Cross drops to 4-5 overall while Providence improves to 5-1-2.

The Crusaders will play their third league game when they host Navy Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
