Amherst, Mass. - Senior guard Shannon Bush (Doylestown, Pa.) scored a career-high 20 points, but it was not enough as the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team defeated Holy Cross, 64-55, in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center. Holy Cross falls to 1-1 on the season, while the Minutewomen improve to 1-1.

Junior center Kaitlin Foley recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior guard Sarah Placek was also in double figures for the Crusaders with 10 points.

UMass had a 29-24 lead at the half, after holding Holy Cross without a field goal for more than eight minutes after a Laura Aloisi three-ball at the 19:35 mark. The Crusaders only managed seven field goals in the first twenty minutes of play, and found themselves down by 10 (16-6) with 10:39 to go, but were able to keep things close, in large part due to a 7-0 run midway through the half.

In the second, Holy Cross cut the lead to one (29-28) with 18:29 left, but UMass went on a 17-7 run to take an 11 point advantage with 9:32 to go. Holy Cross cut the lead to two with 2:00 remaining on a Placek steal and hoop on the other end, but would not get any closer.

Pam Rosanio had a team-high 15 points and added nine rebounds for the Minutewomen. Katie Nelson and Alisha Tatham both scored 11 points, while Tamara Tatham had an 11-rebound, eight point outing.

UMass held Holy Cross to just 25.9 percent from the floor, and forced 19 Crusader turnovers. Holy Cross outrebounded UMass, 41-40 and had another great day from the charity stripe, making 20-of-21 (95.2 percent) free throws.

Holy Cross hosts defending co-Ivy League champion Dartmouth on Tuesday night at the Hart Center. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
