SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior center Kaitlin Foley (Albany, N.Y.) led the Crusaders with 16 points, but it was not enough as San Diego women's basketball team defeated the Crusaders 76-53 Thursday in the first game of the Surf N Slam Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Holy Cross falls to 5-7 overall as San Diego improves to 10-2 on the season.

San Diego scored first, but Foley sunk one from the field for the Crusaders and O'Dell hit a three to start a 10-0 run. During the run senior Brittany Keil (Sparta, N.J.) hit one from the field to put the Crusaders ahead by one (7-6). Foley added five on two lay ups and a free throw (12-6).

Holy Cross went 8-5 to keep the lead (18-11) at 8:12, but then San Diego went on a 14-0 streak to go ahead (23-18) with less than four minutes left in the first half. The Toreros went into the break with an eight-point lead (32-24).

At the half, Foley led the Crusaders with nine points and Kelly Winther had nine for the Toreros.

Holy Cross came out of the locker room to outscore San Diego 9-6 as Foley scored five and Ashley McLaughlin (Andover, Mass) and Keil each added two in the first five minutes of play to come within five (33-38).

In the next five minutes, San Diego went on a 7-3 run (45-36). The Toreros followed up with a 16-7 run to take a 20-point lead (63-43) with five minutes left in the second half. Holy Cross didn't come any closer than five points of the Toreros in the second half as San Diego won the game by 23 points, its largest lead of the game.

Amber Sprague led San Diego with 16 points as Kelly Winther had 15 and Sabine Loewe added 13.

The Crusaders will face Oregon State on Saturday at 6 p.m. PST in the consolation game of the Surf & Slam Tournament. The Beavers were defeated by Texas 65-64 in Thursday's second game.
