Field Hockey Outlasts Quinnipiac, 3-2

Oct. 10, 2007

Box Score

HAMDEN, Ct. - Freshman Kara Gonnerman (St. Louis, Mo.) finished what Courtney Callahan (Acton, Mass.) had started in the first half for Holy Cross scoring the winning shot in penalty strokes as the Crusaders beat Quinnipiac, 3-2. Holy Cross improves to 4-10 while the Bobcats fall to 1-12.

Scoring her second goal of the game, Callahan recorded the goal that pushed the game into overtime sessions. Scoreless in two 15-minute overtime periods, Holy Cross heated the game up during penalty strokes, converting its first four with Gonnerman chipping in the game-winner.

Holy Cross started the game fierce as Callahan turned a penalty corner from Kim Powell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) into a 1-0 lead with 15:15 left in the first half. About four minutes later, the Bobcats' Cassie Adams successfully scored on a penalty corner, assisted by Megan Dahle. Closing out the first half, the teams remained locked in a 1-1 tie.

Quinnipiac grabbed the lead with 21:04 left in regulation time as Bonnie Shea converted a penalty corner into her first career goal, assisted Jill Carroll and Jillian McCreedy.

Callahan's quick movement in front of the net turned a deflection on the left side into what later became the Crusaders' fourth season victory. Gonnerman picked up her third assist of the season.

Goalkeeper Erin Singleton's (Amesbury, Mass.) electric performance added up to 13 saves while the Bobcats' Jenna Grossman recorded six stops.

Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday October 13, playing its third Patriot League contest against Lehigh at 12:00 p.m.
