Holy Cross Women's Soccer Plays To 1-1 Tie With Providence

Aug. 25, 2006

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman forward Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career, as the Holy Cross women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime tie against Providence. The contest marked the first-ever regular season game played at Holy Cross' new Linda Johnson Smith Stadium. Both the Crusaders and the Friars open the season at 0-0-1.

Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead at the 34:54 mark, when sophomore midfielder Casey Boland (Lanshorne, Pa.) played the ball from the right side to junior defender Kaitlin McTague (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) at the top right corner of the penalty box. McTague then found Stand in the center of the box, where she blasted the ball home from 12 yards out.

Providence tied up the score at the 53:35 mark, with an unassisted goal by Nicole Benko. A shot by the Friars' Katelin Blaine was blocked by a defender, then Benko was able to collect the loose ball in front of the Crusaders' goal and find the back of the net.

Junior goalkeeper Jessica Pietrowicz (Worcester, Mass.) made seven saves to lead the Holy Cross defense, while Laura Elfers had five saves for Providence.

Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, August 27, when it plays host to Manhattan at 1:00 p.m.
