Sept. 2, 2007

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. - Sophomore Sarah Gouveia (East Greenwich, R.I.), freshman Lauren Wright (Biglerville, Pa.) and freshman Caitlin Belanger (Fall River, Mass.) each scored their first collegiate goals as the Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Albany, 3-0, in Holy Cross' season-opener on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders start the season 1-0 overall, while the Great Danes fall to 0-2 record.

The Crusaders got on the board just 4:51 into the game when Gouveia scored from 25 yards out. Holy Cross increased its lead to 2-0 with a goal by Wright at the 17:26 mark. Wright stole the ball from a defender in the Albany box and placed the ball in the back of the net. With just one second left in the game, Belanger headed in a cross from junior Casey Boland (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 3-0 final score.

Sophomore goalie Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) played the first half for the Crusaders and made seven saves to earn the win, while freshman Mary Ferketic (West Hartford, Conn.) stopped three shots in the second half. Albany's Maria Liguori made one save.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, September 5, when they will travel to Durham, N.H. to face New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m.
