Women's Soccer Earns 2-1 Overtime Win Over Harvard

Oct. 17, 2006

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Freshman Shelby Stand (Douglas, Mass.) tied the game at 1-1 with only 27 seconds left in regulation and then scored the game-winning goal at 2:43 into sudden-death overtime as the Holy Cross women's soccer team defeated Harvard, 2-1, in non-conference action at Ohiri Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders have now won two straight and improve to 4-11-2 overall, while the Crimson fall to 3-10-1 overall.

After a scoreless first half, Kelli Okuji gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead when she scored a goal with an assist by Rachael Lau at the 55:06 mark. With just 27 seconds remaining in the second half Stand pounced on a loose ball in the Harvard box and then fired a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

In overtime, senior captain Lauren Pereira (Ludlow, Mass.) sent a long through pass up the field that was misplayed by a Harvard defender and then bounced to Stand who buried the ball into the goal to give the Crusaders the victory. The goal was Stand's fifth of the season.

Freshman goalie Jessica Stone (Rockville, Md.) was outstanding in net as she made 15 saves, while Harvard's Lauren Mann stopped six shots.

The Crusaders will return to action when they hit the road to face Colgate in a Patriot League game on Friday, October 20, at 7:00 p.m.
