HC Falls To American, 3-1, In Patriot League Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. - Sophomore Samantha Surface (Fresno, Calif.) recorded a career-best 18 kills, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross volleyball team fell to American, 3-1, by scores of 22-30, 30-22, 30-23 and 30-18 on Tuesday night in the Patriot League season-opener at the Holy Cross Field House. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-12 overall (0-1 Patriot League), while the Eagles improve to 9-6 overall (1-0 Patriot League).

In the first game, Surface had six kills and freshman setter Chelsey O'Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 10 assists to lead the Crusaders to a strong 30-22 win. For the match, O'Donnell registered 38 total assists, while junior libero Molly Anderson (Weston, Conn.) led the defense with 18 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Liz Auger (Barnstable, Mass.) also had a strong match as she recorded 12 kills.

The Eagles were led by Rubena Sukaj's 22 kills and Christina Nash's 47 assists.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, September 22, when they host Navy at the Holy Cross Field House at 2:00 p.m.
