Cross Country Runs Well At National Catholic Championships

South Bend, Ind. - The Holy Cross women's cross country put together a solid day of running as they finished eighth at the National Catholic Championships. Led once again by freshman Elizabeth Alizzi's (Syosset, N.Y.) 28th place overall finish the women finished in the same spot as they did in last year's event. Meanwhile, on the men's side, for the third consecutive race, senior Timothy Murphy (Wayne, N.J.) led the Crusaders. The men's team took 19th overall.

Alizzi's time of 19:21 is her second best of the year in 5K as she finished 1:39 off the leader Sunni Olding of Notre Dame. Behind Alizzi was fellow classmate Colleen Spilka (Hamden, Conn.) in 47th place with a time of 19:37. Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished the race in 74th place. Meghan Hyland (Rye, N.Y) finished out the top five scoring runners along with Kathleen O'Gorman (West Hartford, Conn.).

For the Crusader men, Murphy finished in 60th place individually with a time of 27:00 in the 8K race. Following him was Stephen Kress (Portland, Maine) in 77th place with a time of 27:22. Brad Mish (Hadley, Mass.), John Ortolani (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Sebastian Fidelus (Jersey City, N.J.) rounded out the scoring five for Holy Cross.

The Holy Cross women's team scored 321 to slide into the eighth spot. Notre Dame won the overall team women's race. In 19th place, the Crusader men had 494 points. The men's team race was won by Duquesne.

Next up for both teams it the Murray Keatinge Invitational in Orono, Maine. The race is on Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m.
